In Bandol, no other winery rivais the influence of Domaine Tempier in defining the identity of the appellation. Yet it was only a little more than a decade ago when Tempier, which makes profound, complex reds based on Mourvèdre, faced a collision of forces that threatened its future-and perhaps its survival.
The family patriarch and Bandol's guiding light, Lucien Peyraud, who had built the estate with his wife, Lucie (or "Lulu" as she is affectionately known), died in 1996. Their sons François and Jean-Marie, who had worked at Tempier since 1960 and were ready for retirement, owned the estate in concert with four other siblings who didn't always get along....
